Study Aims To assess whether with minor adjustments to the intervention, the combined behavioral and economic intervention will be more effective in empowering positive adolescents with improved economic livelihoods , better access to care and treatment and slower disease progression.
To assess whether HIV and or HSV-2 positive participants can fully participate in the SHAZ! intervention, blending into the current protocol as full and able participants without the result of marginalization as a result of their disease status. The project operates from one site, South medical Hospital in Chitungwiza. The first participant was enrolled on the 23rd of April 2007. A total of 51 participants were enrolled over a period of 3 months. Participants were randomized into 2 arms: the intervention arm receives lifeskills, health training, vocational training plus a start up grant upon successful completion of the training. The control arm receives life skills and health training only. The control arm will only receive vocational training at the end of the study. All participants receive HIV/AIDS risk reduction counseling, condoms and diagnosis, family planning services, treatment of STIs and minor ailments.
