Study Summary The goal of this pilot study was to explore the feasibility and acceptability of the use of cervical barriers (CB) for HIV prevention among female youth (aged 16-21).The specific objectives were: To explore knowledge, beliefs and attitudes regarding HIV risk and use of barrier methods for HIV prevention among sub-Saharan female youth and female adult relatives of youth; to determine the feasibility of conducting cervical barriers effectiveness research among female youth, and to initiate community dialogue with female youth and female adult relatives for support and participation in future CB trials; and to collect preliminary acceptability data (device preference) about three CB(Ortho All-Flex®, SILCS® and FemCap®) among female youth. This was a qualitative exploratory behavioral study to assess device preference, including focus group discussion and follow-up insertion/removal practice session. The study population were: sexually experienced female youth aged 16-21 living around Harare, Zimbabwe and female adult relatives (mothers or aunts) of female youth (who are not related to youth participants) living around Harare, Zimbabwe. A total of 47 youths and 34 mothers and aunts were enrolled and the results from this pilot can be viewed from the publication link. Study Contacts 1. Sibongile Mtetwa (Study Coordinator) Email:
