Study Summary
In this HIV prevention trial, 34 communities in Africa (South Africa, Tanzania & Zimbabwe) and 14 in Thailand were randomized to receive CBVCT intervention in addition to the SVCT or SVCT services alone. The CBVCT intervention’s major strategies are; to engage the community through outreach; to make VCT more available in community settings and to provide Post-Test Support. A qualitative cohort in each community was also recruited in order to collect data on how stigma changes over time in the communities. Primary Objectives The primary objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that communities receiving 3 years of CBVCT, relative to communities receiving 3 years of SVCT, will have significantly lower prevalence of recent HIV-1 infection. Study Design (population, duration) The eligibility criterion for participation in the community-based VCT intervention in CBVCT communities is ≥ 16 years of age and 18-32 years for the qualitative cohort. The entire study project, from planning work through data analysis, is scheduled to last 8 years with the intervention component of the study lasting 3 years Participating sites This is multi-site study being carried out in Zimbabwe, South Africa (Soweto & Vulindlela), Tanzania and Thailand. The Zimbabwe site operates in Mutoko district with two mobile testing teams and one static site. Progress to date The intervention phase of the site rolled out in February 2006. Eighteen months down the line, a total of 4781 clients have tested for HIV through the CBVCT services while 3064 have been tested at the SVCT site.
