UZ-UCSF CENTRAL LABORATORY

Location: University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences; about 2km away from the main administrative site at 15 Phillips Ave Belgravia.

Location

Based at the Parirenyatwa Referral Hospital within the Obs & Gyn wing. The Central Lab is approximately 3km from the Harare CBD.

Purpose: The Central Laboratory supports cutting-edged research in HIV Prevention and Treatment.

Personnel: Key personnel include, Lab Manager, Lab Reseach Coordinator, Lab QA/QC Consultant, and Lab QA/QC Coordinator. All laboratory testing staffs have experience in clinical and research laboratories and are registered with the Health Professions Council of Zimbabwe.

Lab Testing Units (average Monthly Statistics): Serology: [HIV Rapid Test (630), ELISA (224), Western Blot (60), Syphilis (150), HSV-2 (56), and Hepatitis B (8)], Haematology [Full Blood Counts (1102), Differentials (20), and Coagulation Studies (80)],  Immunology [CD4/CD8 (762)], Molecular Biology [HIV DNA PCR (200), Viral Load/RNA PCR (217), CT/NG Roche Amplicor PCR (66), and CT/NG SDA PCR (101)], Clinical Chemistry[Liver Function Tests (400), Renal Function Tests (285), Lipids (36), Cardiac Enzymes and Lactate(40)], Microbiology [Microscopy and Gram Stains (50), Wet Mounts (200)].

Lab QA/QC Section: Strictly monitors laboratory stock, turn-around-time (TAT), release of results as well as regularly receives and supervises the testing and reporting of results for Proficiency Testing (PT) panels from College of American Pathology (CAP), Virology Quality Assessment Program (VQA), UK NEQAS, ZINQAP, and MPEP and DNA PCR programs of CDC, Atlanta to strengthen and validate EQA programme.

Information Technology: Uses the Laboratory Data Management System (LDMS), Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Freezer Works as its main software platforms.

Affiliations: Has online real time contact with Frontier Science and Technology Research Foundation (FRSTF) through LDMS for validation of DNA PCR results. It is also linked to the HPTN Central Laboratory at Johns Hopkins with prompt access to its LDMS data base.

Management: Operates through the Quality Management System (QMS) following the International Standard Organizational (ISO) 15189:2003 format in preparation for accreditation through South Africa National Accreditation Services (SANAS).
